Job Opportunity: ODI seeks Senior Media Officer

The Overseas Development Institute is seeking to appoint a talented and dynamic Senior Media Officer to join their fast-paced central communications team and lead the institution’s media work.

ODI is an independent think tank with more than 230 staff, including researchers, communicators and specialist support staff. They provide high-quality research, policy advice, consultancy services and tailored training – bridging the gap between research and policy and using innovative communication to mobilise audiences.

About the job: 

  • Lead ODI’s media work, including the formulation, delivery and evaluation of ODI’s media strategy and plans.
  • Design and deliver pro-active media plans for ODI publications, including drafting press releases, developing key messages and pitching these to media.
  • React quickly to opportunities presented by global events and the rolling news agenda, including drafting and pitching ODI statements and organising media interviews with ODI experts and ODI’s senior management and Executive Director.
  • Work with ODI research teams and communications officers to develop and deliver media plans for research reports and other outputs, shaping content and key messages to secure media coverage. Provide advice and support to researchers, including media training.
  • Develop compelling media content for both short news cycles as well as documentaries and feature pieces.
  • Act as the first point of contact for incoming media enquiries, recording all relevant information, and liaising with relevant colleagues to deliver a timely and appropriate response.
  • Build and strengthen ODI’s engagement and relationships with key media outlets and correspondents in the UK, Europe and globally.
  • Increase ODI’s media reach and coverage in key regional and international media markets.
  • On-going scanning of the external environment to identify opportunities to profile ODI work and research.
  • Occasional travel to developing countries with journalists, to profile our research work.
  • Work with communications colleagues to deliver media messages on a range of platforms, including multimedia (video, photography and audio).
  • Work with communications team assistant to ensure accurate, up-to-date logging of all media coverage, providing statistics on coverage and uptake. Ensure that the media section of the ODI website, newsletters and other online channels are kept up-to-date.
