A great new episode of NPR’s Goats and Soda: Stories of life in a changing world offers some help and advice for adults trying to explain the Coronavirus to children, and to help them stay safe and dampen anxiety and fear about it. They’ve also done a great kid-friendly comic book!
The Just For Kids: A Comic Exploring The New Coronavirus episode includes clear short interviews with some scientists explaining what the virus is, and how to deal with it. The website also includes a link to download a lovely comic, that can be printed and folded into a zine to hand out or share. The comic was created by NPR reporter and Goats and Soda deputy editor Malaka Gharib.
Malaka is also the author and illustrator of I Was Their American Dream: A Graphic Memoir.
The response to the zine has been phenomenal. Readers translated it into Spanish and Lithuanian, for example (check out Malaka’s Twitter feed for links to the the translations and latest feedback). Libraries have distributed the zines to children and it’s not just children you are enjoying it. Carleton University in Ottawa printed and distributed it at their library too, so it’s not just the kids enjoying it!
