SheDecides is a diverse global political movement fighting for a world where every woman, girl, and young person has autonomy over their body, life and future. By bringing together leaders in bodily autonomy from Africa, Asia, the Arab Region, Latin America and the Caribbean, SheDecides takes collective action and stands up for bodily autonomy and sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHRH) for all, with a focus on abortion rights and sexuality education.
The movement’s vision for 2022-2027 is to counter opposition and contribute to advancing bodily autonomy and SRHRH by strengthening coordinated political action, and amplifying the collective voices of SheDecides’ members and allies. Woven through their goals are three cross-cutting, overarching themes: intentionally challenging opposition; meaningfully including young people; and practising intersectional feminist values.
SheDecides’ ambition is to advocate for political action on bodily autonomy and SRHR in the UK and globally. In countries without access to safe and legal abortion, such as Namibia, Malawi, and the Dominican Republic, SheDecides brings much-needed visibility to activists and advocates through international media attention. Through this, SheDecides demonstrates that the efforts of local, southern-led activism has the power to change legislation, strengthen health systems, and make abortion safe and dignified.
In terms of youth engagement, SheDecides has created shared platforms of power to ensure that young people are meaningfully engaged. Additionally, within the movement, a Youth Advisory Panel (YAP) will meet four times throughout 2024 to provide advice, input, and recommendations to centre and advance the sexual and reproductive health and rights of young people worldwide.
The YAP is a dedicated youth-owned space within the SheDecides movement which is made up of representatives from different SheDecides youth champions. It plays a pivotal role in ensuring meaningful and inclusive youth participation at SheDecides and advancing the Youth Engagement Strategy (YES) commitments. The strategy commits the movement to ten pledges in order to realise meaningful youth engagement, participation, and accountability.
