Challenging Western perspectives in global health

By 03/02/2025

This paper by Fayemi et al. asks us to look at the topic of global health ethics in a different way. It argues that conventional Western perspectives overlook the rich, diverse viewpoints from the Global South. Using a Yorùbá cultural approach that uses the beehive metaphor to symbolise solidarity, the authors argue for a more inclusive and equitable approach to global health ethics, where diverse perspectives, particularly from the Global South, are valued and integrated.

By challenging conventional ways of thinking, the authors promote a more inclusive understanding of solidarity. In turn, the beehive metaphor emphasises that solidarity is not just about standing with others but involves active participation, sharing, and mutual support.

The authors also discuss the implications of this decolonial approach for global health research funding. By incorporating African perspectives on solidarity, global health practices have the potential to become more equitable and just.  To achieve this, we must recognise the interconnectedness of all communities, and ensure that marginalised voices are heard and valued in global health discourse.
