Deadline: 21 May, 2019
Location: London, UK, with extensive travel
Are you a strategic communications professional with strong links to Africa who knows how to deliver compelling messages that will resonate with different audiences? Could you inspire and engage colleagues and empower them to be effective communicators? Would you like to contribute to change that could benefit millions of East Africans?
Gatsby Africa is recruiting a Communications Director to bring ideas and innovations to transform our internal and external communications.
Gatsby funds and implements programmes that look to catalyse and influence large-scale and lasting change in priority sectors, such as cotton in Tanzania. We also build and support local organisations dedicated to sector transformation. We aim to capture the learning from these initiatives, think hard about what works and why, and share the lessons with others engaged in similar work – including governments and donors.
The successful candidate will be at the heart of this work. The Director will develop a wide-ranging vision for communications across Gatsby, leading on internal and organisational-level external communications, whilst inspiring and building the capacity and expertise of other colleagues to undertake programmatic communications in a professional way.
The Director will report to the Executive Director and play a crucial role as part of our Leadership Group, helping to inspire and motivate our teams, shape our culture and bring people together to deliver common goals and achieve our ambitious mission.
The ideal candidate will have:
- Substantial experience of developing and implementing internal and external communications strategies focused on African staff and audiences within an international organisation
- Experience of advising senior leadership on effective approaches to communications
- Experience of successfully managing, mentoring and professionally developing colleagues and building their communication skills
- Experience working at senior levels in low/middle income countries in Africa and some exposure to private sector development and market systems approaches
We would particularly welcome applications from women and candidates of African heritage. Open to applicants with the right to work in the UK, and Gatsby are open to sponsoring work permits for suitably qualified East Africans. More information here.
