PES Communications Manager role
We are looking for a Communications Manager to lead the development and delivery of strategic public communications across the Poverty, Economics and Sustainability (PES) research cluster. This is an exciting and pivotal role, working with senior staff within the research cluster and across the institute to support the delivery of ODI’s strategic priorities and to strengthen the impact of our externally-facing public affairs and communications work. The post holder will be responsible for workload planning and prioritisation, and will work with business development colleagues to ensure strategic public affairs and communications outputs are included in bids, proposals and contracts.
Other key responsibilities include:
- Managing the communications function and communications team within the cluster
- Seeking opportunities to link ODI’s research with external policy and political decision-making processes
- Supporting researchers to translate their work into strong policy propositions and engaging public affairs and communications outputs
- Leading the development and delivery of effective public affairs and communications strategies to enhance the reputation, visibility and impact of ODI’s work
- Overseeing the day to day delivery of public affairs and communications outputs from the research cluster, ensuring the high quality, timeliness and effectiveness
About you
- Education to at least degree level
- Substantial experience in a comparable post
- Experience in drawing up and delivering successful public affairs and communications strategies and delivery plans
- Experience in managing a range of communications disciplines, including publications, events and digital/multimedia
- Experience in social media and blog/op-ed writing
- Track-record in delivering policy change or impact, through successful communications strategies
- Experience in working in matrix-management arrangements, balancing the needs of different stakeholders
- Experience in managing external suppliers, including agencies
- Experience in managing a budget & effective M&E
- Understanding of decision making and policy makers processes in the research cluster sectors
- Use of own initiative and ability to work in a self-directed manner
- Intellectual ability to grasp new concepts/subject matter quickly
- Excellent interpersonal skills including demonstrated ability to liaise and communicate with colleagues at all levels of seniority and from different cultures
- Strong organisational, prioritisation, project management with emphasis on delivery of results.
- Ability to work to strict deadlines and under pressure
- Excellent proofreading and editing skills
- Good knowledge of different communications platforms, including web-based tools and social media
- Excellent IT and data management skills
