By 18/12/2023

Job Title: Business Development Intern
Organisation: Grist
Location: USA- any state
Salary: $20-$25 per hour

Grist is a nonprofit, independent media organization dedicated to highlighting climate solutions and uncovering environmental injustices. Since 1999, we have used the power of journalism to engage the public about the perils of the most existential threat we face. Now that three-quarters of Americans recognize that climate change is happening, we’ve shifted our focus to show that a just and sustainable future is within reach.

Over the past four years, Grist has scaled from a Seattle based team of 20-25 to a nationally distributed organization of ~60 with a growing budget. Grist’s strategy centers on climate, justice, and solutions, and we implement our mission through two areas of work: Our award-winning Editorial Program and our work to transform talent and representation within environmental storytelling. Grist was recently awarded the National Magazine Award for General Excellence. In addition, Grist was named best small newsroom by the Edward R Murrow Awards in 2022 and the Online Journalism Awards in 2021 (among dozens of other awards and nominations). According to a summer 2023 survey, 100% of staff would recommend Grist to a friend.

We are seeking a Business Development Intern to join the Fundraising department for six months. The Business Development Intern will be responsible for helping to grow Grist’s earned income, which includes advertising, editorial sponsorships, and event sponsorships. The Business Development Intern will collaborate with several of Grist’s advertising partners, including several companies, nonprofits, and foundations.

The salary range for this internship will be $20 – $25 per hour depending on experience. Grist is based in Seattle, but the job doesn’t have to be. We have staff around the country.

  • Working with Senior Manager to conceptualize new sponsorship and advertising offerings
  • Reporting back to clients on their advertising or sponsorship campaigns via campaign reports
  • Coordinate and liaise with editorial staff on earned income opportunities that overlap with editorial stories or projects
  • Additional responsibilities as assigned

Requirements:

  • Currently pursuing or recently earned an undergraduate degree, MBA, or enrolled in a media or journalism program
  • Available sixteen to twenty-four hours per week
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
