African Population and Health Research Center (APHRC) is an international non-governmental organization, based in Africa and led by Africans, which conducts high-level scientific research in areas such as education, population, health, aging, urbanization and the well-being of African populations. APHRC aims to drive change in sub-Saharan Africa using reliable data analyzed by experienced African researchers. Their research programs are oriented towards continental development priorities and are guided by the belief that evidence must be at the forefront of decisions regarding the health and well-being of populations and the development of the continent.

APHRC is seeking to fill the position of Research Officer for its regional office based in Dakar, Senegal

Roles and responsibilities

  • Contribute to the overall management of the study in liaison with the project manager.
  • Liaise with the Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning Manager to document project milestones and outcomes.
  • Lead the process to obtain approval from national ethics committees for research projects.
  • Carry out literature reviews in the project’s main areas of interest to, among other things, identify gaps, determine relevant research opportunities and define priority actions, as required.
  • Develop questionnaires and other research tools, training manuals and practical guides to be used for data collection.
  • Coordinate the recruitment, training and supervision of investigators.
  • Coordinate survey work and assume responsibility for data quality.
  • Mobilize and inform the community about the research project.
  • Participate in the development of research protocols.
  • Assist in the translation of project documents from English to French and vice versa.
  • Prepare periodic activity and project reports.
  • Participate in the dissemination of research results and dialogue on actions to be taken with appropriate audiences.
  • Prepare policy briefs and information sheets based on project results.
  • Perform other duties as required assigned by supervisor.

Qualifications, skills and experience:

  • Master of Research in Demography, Statistics, Economics, Public Health, Geography, Sociology or other related discipline
  • At least 3 years of professional experience following obtaining a Master’s degree, preferably in a research environment
  • Solid experience in quantitative analyzes including mastery of Stata and R software
  • Experience in field surveys for both qualitative and quantitative data,
  • Experience in managing teams of investigators
  • Mastery of oral and written communication in French and English
  • Ability to work independently, set priorities, balance multiple tasks and meet tight deadlines
  • Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills and ability to work with people from diverse cultures
  • Proven professional experience in a very active multicultural research environment
  • Proven experience coordinating multi-country research projects.
  • Professional experience in French-speaking West Africa
